Redesign of NASA's Solid Rocket Booster
JAR performed a detailed three dimensional
finite element analysis of the aft fixed nozzle housing joint of the
space shuttle solid rocket motor for Morton Thiokol, Inc. as part of the
total redesign effort undertaken after the Challenger accident. The
analysis included bolt preloads and contact between the various
components, and was designed to study movement of the O-ring grooves in
the joint under loads simulating maximum thrust pressure.
